Nikon D70 Digital SLR Camera -- Body Only ( Lens Required )Nikon D70 Digital SLR Camera -- Body Only ( Lens Required )
Buy used from: $269.75
My DSLR journey started with the Nikon D70 that now goes for around $300 used. It made an incredible splash when it came out in 2004, and you know what? It's still a great camera! Now available for a fraction of its original cost, it makes a great entry point. A powerful, intuitive, adjust-everything-on-the-fly camera that's hard to beat until you get to much costlier systems.
Nikon D200 10.2MP Digital SLR Camera (Body Only)Nikon D200 10.2MP Digital SLR Camera (Body Only)
Buy new: $799.98 / Used from: $729.00
Here's the next stepping stone in my view from entry-level DSLRs. Incredible feature set, ruggedness, and quality - plus the superb handling and ergonomics Nikon is known for. I really love this camera. Now that the D300 is out, get a D200 for a deal and skip the D80. Used they run a bit over $700. (You might want to keep your D70 as a second body.)

This is the prosumer version of the D3, and my heart's next desire (as a step up from my D200). Reviewers of this full-frame (FX) gem have raved about it's virtues. The impressive 1-2 punch that Nikon has delivered with their FX camera line up has caught the attention of even dedicated Canon pros..
Nikon D90 DX 12.3MP Digital SLR Camera (Body Only)Nikon D90 DX 12.3MP Digital SLR Camera (Body Only)
Buy new: $929.00
This updated D80 brings much of the D3 technologies to Nikon's midrange DX line up, including its super low noise characteristics. While it doesn't have the build quality of the D200, it sure packs a lot of appealing capabilities and warrants careful consideration at this price point.
Nikon 18-200mm f/3.5-5.6 G ED-IF AF-S VR DX Zoom-Nikkor LensNikon 18-200mm f/3.5-5.6 G ED-IF AF-S VR DX Zoom-Nikkor Lens
Buy new: $639.95 / Used from: $545.00
With an incredible zoom range and image stabilization that routinely gains 4 stops, of my many lenses, this one gets used the most. Why? It gets shots you missed before changing lenses. At f3.5-5.6 it's not an available light lens (I usually use flash indoors), but it focuses fast in low light and handles well. A modern technology marvel.

Buy new: $264.95 / Used from: $195.00
At nearly 1/3 the cost of the Nikkor 18-200mm VR zoom, this lens might appeal to some as a low-cost alternative. For me, the loss of VR and the 200mm end is not worth the savings, but you can try it and see. Amazon makes it easy to sell your lenses later! Sharp, compact, and light (due to heavy use of plastics), with distortion issues at 18mm.
Sigma 10-20mm f/4-5.6 EX DC HSM Lens for Nikon Digital SLR CamerasSigma 10-20mm f/4-5.6 EX DC HSM Lens for Nikon Digital SLR Cameras
Buy new: $455.05
With most zooms only going to 17 or 18mm, I soon missed the wider fields I could get with my film wideangle primes. This sharp Sigma zoom adds an amazing capability (and 10 is really wide compared to the 12mm on alternative lens). After the 18-200mm, this is my next favorite zoom. Honestly, this is the one Sigma even many Pros like.

Buy new: $1,179.99 / Used from: $1,139.95
Available light candids of kids requires a fast lens. This very sharp lens stays at f2.8 the entire range, is built like a tank, and has a built-in motor for quick & quiet focusing.

Buy new: $416.98 / Used from: $350.00
If you can't afford the Nikkor 17-55mm f2.8, this is a low-cost alternative. Build quality is no match for the costlier Nikkor, and it's slower to focus in low light, but image quality is extraordinary even wide open. Very light and compact.
Lowepro Nova 170 AW Camera Bag (Bordeaux Red)Lowepro Nova 170 AW Camera Bag (Bordeaux Red)
Buy new: $55.95
Like all photographers, I have numerous bags in many sizes for different needs. However, the 170 is my favorite minimalist bag. It perfectly holds, for example, my D200 + 18-200mm, 10-20mm, SB-600 flash for fast retrieval, plus filters, memory, batteries, and charger. It even has a belt loop and weather shield..
Hoya SUPER HMC Haze UV(0) - Filter - UV - 72 mmHoya SUPER HMC Haze UV(0) - Filter - UV - 72 mm
Buy new: $44.89
This filter has a very effective coating (be sure to get super HMC) that noticeably cuts glare over uncoated ones, yet is attractively priced. The 72mm fits the 18-200mm; use 77mm for the Sigma 10-20mm.

Buy new: $40.95 / Used from: $41.99
I've standardized on SanDisk Extreme III CompactFlash cards. They're on Nikon's approved memory card list in my Nikon D200 manual, plus have been 100% reliable. Carrying multiple cards gives redundancy in case of a rare failure.

Buy new: $229.00 / Used from: $185.00
Every serious photographer needs a camera that slips easily in the pocket, and goes everywhere for those times you're without your big guns. I like the 4x optical (15x optical + digital) wide zoom (28-105mm film camera equivalent), big 3" LCD, AUTO ISO to 1600, and image stabilization. Much higher noise than a DSLR, but at least you'll get the picture.
Nikon SB-600 Speedlight Flash for Nikon Digital SLR CamerasNikon SB-600 Speedlight Flash for Nikon Digital SLR Cameras
Buy new: $172.95
While the Nikon sensor allows you to get very low noise at higher ISO figures, sometime you need to supplement interior lighting or use fill flash. One of the reasons I went with Nikon is their amazing flash system, which allows you to integrate existing and flash lighting to achieve very natural results. This tool will expand your world of great picture taking.

Once you perfect capturing and enhancing your images, you'll want to make the best prints imaginable. Epson printers produce stunning matte finish prints with beautiful color and detail. The R1800 is a lower cost alternative to the terrific R2400, and makes incredible matte and glossy prints (glossier than the pricier R2400) in sizes up to 13x44" with 200 year archival ink.

Eventually your sensor will need cleaning. This low-cost device can direct a blast of filtered air to dislodge dust and particles, and is a safe way to clean the sensor or lenses. Most of the time, this is all your sensor needs to be clean again.

In time (or if you purchase a used DSLR), your sensor won't come clean simply using a Rocket duster (above). To check your sensor, photograph a light surface (like the sky) with a very small aperture (f22 or greater). Particles will show up as blurry spots. First read http://www.bythom.com/cleaning.htm and then use this cleaner kit to make your sensor like new.
Nikon D3 12.1MP FX Digital SLR Camera (Body Only)Nikon D3 12.1MP FX Digital SLR Camera (Body Only)
Buy new: Too low to display
This will surely look out of place in this list, but IMO, if you're already using a Nikon D200, diminishing returns quickly sets in. To really get the next quantum leap in capability, you need to go to the full frame, see-in-the-dark Nikon D3 or D700. OK, I'm not getting a D3 anytime soon, but I know digital nirvana when I see it.
Nikon 70-200mm f/2.8G ED-IF AF-S VR Zoom Nikkor Lens for Nikon Digital SLR CamerasNikon 70-200mm f/2.8G ED-IF AF-S VR Zoom Nikkor Lens for Nikon Digital SLR Cameras
Buy new: $1,632.88 / Used from: $1,549.00
This lens is big, heavy, and expensive. Now for the superlatives: uncompromisingly sharp -- even wide open, ultra-quiet and fast focusing, fixed f2.8 aperature, plus VR. Appealing mainly to pros that won't settle for anything less than the best, it effectively replaces all the prime lenses in it's zoom range -- it's that good.
NIKON 80-200mm F/2.8NIKON 80-200mm F/2.8
This is a lower-cost, but still tack-sharp, pro-grade alternative to the lens above, However, it lacks VR, which is extremely useful for long tele-shots. Still, these are attractively priced on the used market, and I bought one myself.

Buy new: $1,537.00 / Used from: $1,400.00
Also uncompromisingly good, this lens, the 70-200mm, and the D3 will set you back $10 grand, plus you'll be yearning for the 14-24 F2.8 next. If this is just a hobby, now you've got a serious addiction; however, if you're a pro, these are quality tools of the trade that stand up to punishment and deliver the goods.

Test reports suggest Nikon has truly achieved perfection with this design -- it is exceptional without peer (including other brands). While it provides full frame coverage, a pro with a D3 camera plus a D300 for a backup body might use this lens on the D300 for a 21-36mm equivalent walk-around lens.

Buy new: Too low to display / Used from: $1,250.00
For the pro using a D3, this exceptional camera is an ideal second body because of its similar handling. It shares much of the D3 sophistication, but uses a DX sensor (unlike the full-frame D3). It also makes an incredible primary camera for the serious amateur.

Buy used from: $300.00
Here's a tip for D3 owners wanting a wide zoom-range, do-everything lens (when you want to travel light and take just one lens). Yeah, it's one of those plastic consumer-grade lenses, but this tiny gem produces nicely sharp images, with near macro close focusing. Snap one up before others catch on and they become scarce.
