![]() | Tokina AF 12-24mm f/4 AT-X Pro DX Lens for Canon Digital SLR
Buy new: $489.95 / Used from: $410.00 Superwide, here we come! Consider this, you get a constant f/4 zoom (why don't they make more of these people, why?) with a better build quality and the EXACT same image quality as the Nikon 12-24. The difference? You pay half the price. The only downside is some CA (also known as "purple fringing"). Shoot in RAW, and Photoshop/Capture NX/your favorite RAW converter will solve all your problems.

![]() | Nikon 70-300mm f/4.5-5.6G ED-IF AF-S VR Zoom Nikkor Lens for Nikon Digital SLR Cameras
Buy new: $445.24 / Used from: $430.00 Buy this lens. It works great, and it has VR, and it's less than $500 (or it should be). A little soft at 300, but everyone loves it (myself included). However, if you're an IQ whore and you demand more than f/5.6 at the long end, consider a used 300mm f/4 (non AFS version). Prices should be about the same.

![]() | Nikon D80 10.2MP Digital SLR Camera (Body only)
Buy new: Too low to display / Used from: $499.00 It's a D80. It has a beautiful viewfinder, decent autofocus speed (decent people, decent! We're not professional photographers here!), 10.2 megapixels (wish it had 6, then it'd cost less and work the same), and lots of other stuff you don't care about. It's a great camera and a great price.

![]() | Nikon 35-70mm f/2.8D AF Zoom Nikkor Lens for Nikon Digital SLR Cameras
Buy used from: $549.99 $300 Pro Lens! OMG, I think I just wet myself! Ok, so it's a very awkward focal range on a DX format camera (thank you 1.5x crop factor). But it's f/2.8, it's awesome, and it's cheap! How could you go wrong? (hint: you can't)

![]() | Nikon 18-70mm f/3.5-4.5G ED IF AF-S DX Nikkor Zoom Lens
Buy new: $399.00 / Used from: $117.99 The standard zoom. The least exciting lens (and subsequently cheapest) on the list. Also your most useful lens. You demand more? Well, then it's going to cost you about $1000. I'd recommend a Nikon 17-35 2.8 used for ~$1000. The real question-- why can't Nikon make a FX (full frame) 16-50ish f/4 VR zoom. It's what we all want. What's with this 16-86 f/3.5-5.6 VR DX or whatever it is? Ptooey.

![]() | Nikon 50mm f/1.8D AF Nikkor Lens for Nikon Digital SLR Cameras
Buy new: $109.99 / Used from: $105.97 So cheap! So fast! Crappy focal range on DX sensors, true, but I repeat myself, so cheap, so fast! Sometimes the light ain't there, and for a neigh $100 you can gather every last ounce of that light. Just stand way back or something. Or get closer, depending on the situation.

![]() | Nikon 105mm f/2.8G ED-IF AF-S VR Micro-Nikkor Lens
Buy new: $739.95 / Used from: $799.00 Um, ignore the other Nikon lens that is the exact same that Amazon sells for ~$1200. Not sure what that's all about. Anyway, here's a secret, "don't buy this lens!" Yes, I said it. Instead, find a used copy of the old AF 105 2.8. It's a LOT sharper! Super obviously so! Expect it to cost you about $500.
