Spring Into Digital Photography (Spring Into... Series)Spring Into Digital Photography (Spring Into... Series) by Joseph T. Jaynes
Buy new: $23.09 / Used from: $7.12
I didn't have much expectation for this since it was only $0.77. Yet, it's full of excellent, useful information which has helped me fill in the gaps with the other books. Comes with a white balance card. If I could only select one book, this would be it. 10/10
Magic Lantern Guides: Pentax K200D (Magic Lantern Guides)Magic Lantern Guides: Pentax K200D (Magic Lantern Guides) by Michael Guncheon
Buy new: $13.57 / Used from: $11.23
The camera's users manual is, of course, essential reading. I've found Pentax's manual generally OK, but sometimes overwhelming or unclear. This guide is a great supplement. 9/10
Understanding Exposure: How to Shoot Great Photographs with a Film or Digital Camera (Updated Edition)Understanding Exposure: How to Shoot Great Photographs with a Film or Digital Camera (Updated Edition) by Bryan Peterson
Buy new: $17.13 / Used from: $12.45
Bought this a while ago and it has good information, but for some reason it has not been as understandable or easy to read as I had hoped. [After reading Spring Into Digital Photography, I'm going through this book again and it's making somewhat more sense. Still, I don't find it as compelling as SIDP] 7.5/10
The Digital Photography BookThe Digital Photography Book by Scott Kelby
Buy new: $11.99 / Used from: $10.99
I jumped on the Scott Kelby bandwagon and thought this was the book to get. After reading SIDP, I realize it is mostly overrated. This is essentially a recipe book. If you follow the recipes, you'll get decent photos/results, but you won't get any understanding of why or of how to optimize settings. I'm not saying the information is bad or wrong, just incomplete. 6/10
The Digital Photography Book, Volume 2The Digital Photography Book, Volume 2 by Scott Kelby
Buy new: $14.99 / Used from: $16.23
Similar to the his first book--mostly recipes. Maybe intermediate/advanced photographers who mostly know this material will find it more useful to jog their memories. I'm also of the "his 'humor' is more annoying than funny" school of thought. 5.5/10
A Laboratory Manual for Photographic ScienceA Laboratory Manual for Photographic Science by T.W. Haywood
Buy used from: $85.49
[This applies to the textbook, which I couldn't find in the search, not the lab manual.] I've only skimmed through this book. It covers the science behind photography and actually seems quite interesting. Not a beginner's book, though, especially for non-technical types. 7/10
Adobe Photoshop Elements 6 and Adobe Premiere Elements 4 Classroom in a Book CollectionAdobe Photoshop Elements 6 and Adobe Premiere Elements 4 Classroom in a Book Collection by Adobe Press
Buy new: $40.94 / Used from: $32.82
I'm running Adobe Photoshop Elements 6 and Premiere Elements 4. I've tried many different programs for photo and video editing but haven't been happy with any. I'm glad I switched to Adobe's products. This is written by Adobe and works for me. It's a little pricey, but comes with a DVD for the exercises. 8.5/10
