Nikon D300 DX 12.3MP Digital SLR Camera (Body Only)Nikon D300 DX 12.3MP Digital SLR Camera (Body Only)
Buy new: $1,624.88 / Used from: $1,449.99
Nikon's current top-of-the-line half-size camera body. I prefer this particular form factor over the full-size bodies (D2X, D3) for ergonomic reasons. I grew out of my D70 after several years; if I hadn't, I would still be using it today.
Nikon 70-200mm f/2.8G ED-IF AF-S VR Zoom Nikkor Lens for Nikon Digital SLR CamerasNikon 70-200mm f/2.8G ED-IF AF-S VR Zoom Nikkor Lens for Nikon Digital SLR Cameras
I produce some of my best images using this lens. It is a workhorse, and is not to be underestimated. I've used 70-300 lenses, and based on that experience, I know that carrying the 70-200 with me is worth the extra effort.
Nikon 50mm f/1.4D AF Nikkor Lens for Nikon Digital SLR CamerasNikon 50mm f/1.4D AF Nikkor Lens for Nikon Digital SLR Cameras
Buy new: $314.14
This is my portrait lens. It does a fabulous job in nearly all circumstances, but a fast action lens this is not. If you are using this lens at its widest aperture (which is why you want this lens), the plane of focus is extremely shallow. You'll want to take more than one exposure to get everything right. I don't use this lens because it is sharp, I use it because it renders a beautiful image.
Nikon 77mm Circular Polarizer II Thin Ring Multi-Coated Glass FilterNikon 77mm Circular Polarizer II Thin Ring Multi-Coated Glass Filter
Buy new: $123.88
This is the one filter you cannot afford to ever leave at home-- a circular polarizer. Make sure to get a name brand (multi-coated) polarizer, or go straight for the top-- the Singh Ray warming polarizer. No other filter is as useful (some would say essential) for so many different types of photography. Buy step-up rings as necessary to use 77mm filters with smaller lenses (like the 50mm f/1.4).
Nikon SB-600 Speedlight Flash for Nikon Digital SLR CamerasNikon SB-600 Speedlight Flash for Nikon Digital SLR Cameras
Buy new: $184.88 / Used from: $183.49
No compromises-- so why not the SB800? I like my camera equipment to offer as little frustration as possible, and the SB800 offers too many options to deal with on the fly. What's more, the SB600 has a faster recycle time, meaning I can get more shots off in a burst with the SB600 than I could with the SB800. That's what I need.
NIKON MC-36 Multi-Function Remote Cord ( 33.5 inches )NIKON MC-36 Multi-Function Remote Cord ( 33.5 inches )
Buy new: $120.12 / Used from: $115.95
When using your high-quality tripod (see: Gitzo, Really Right Stuff), you must have some kind of off-camera mechanism for tripping the shutter. While a mirror lock up function certainly helps, it is no substitute for a proper hands-off shutter release.
Domke 700-40D F-4AF Pro System Bag (Olive Drab)Domke 700-40D F-4AF Pro System Bag (Olive Drab)
Buy new: Too low to display
Don't skimp on your camera bags. When you're on foot, you want to have your important gear with you. That means your key lenses, your filters, and of course, your camera body. Maybe even your spare camera body. You need a bag that gets the job done.
Nikon 105mm f/2.8G ED-IF AF-S VR Micro-Nikkor LensNikon 105mm f/2.8G ED-IF AF-S VR Micro-Nikkor Lens
Buy new: $766.83
I use the non-VR version of this lens, only because I bought mine before the VR version was available. I find the 105mm macro lens the most comfortable to use; I have to get too close with the 60mm macro, and the 200mm macro keeps me too far away.
Nikon 18-200mm f/3.5-5.6 G ED-IF AF-S VR DX Zoom-Nikkor LensNikon 18-200mm f/3.5-5.6 G ED-IF AF-S VR DX Zoom-Nikkor Lens
Buy new: $656.94 / Used from: $605.00
What if you're getting on an international flight with a single, small backpack to carry everything you'll need for a week (or more)? You take one camera body, one lens, one battery, and one card, because otherwise you don't have enough room for your clothes. In that situation, this is the lens you take.
