![]() | Nikon F4 Camera Body
Buy used from: $200.00 The Nikon F4 is the last of the legendary Nikon F pro cameras to use dials and knobs instead of buttons and menus! This makes it one of the most intuitive advanced cameras ever made. While it works with newer autofocus (AF-S) lens, focusing isn't as fast as on more recent cameras (and VR doesn't function); however, no other Nikon F series body offers such complete support of older manual Nikkors.

![]() | Nikon F 5 - SLR camera - 35mm - body only - black
Buy used from: $620.00 While the very compact and light N75 will give you exceptional results, a used F5 -- one of the best pro cameras ever made -- can be owned used for only around $500. What a deal for a classic! Works with the latest VR AF-S lenses.

![]() | NIKON F100 35mm SLR Camera Body
Buy used from: $299.99 The F100 has much of the F5 capabilities with less bulk (the battery grip is an add-on, not integral as with the F5) and for a corresponding lower price tag. But if you'll want the battery grip anyway, get the F5.

![]() | Nikon N75 35mm SLR Camera (Body Only)
Buy used from: $99.99 At a price point of around $100, this is an incredible value in an amateur-class camera loaded with advanced features, plus support for the latest AF-S and VR lenses. Highly recommended if you're a beginner but want something to grow with, or desire a competent, very light and compact camera for travel.

![]() | Nikon 50mm f/1.8D AF Nikkor Lens for Nikon Digital SLR Cameras
Buy new: $114.95 This is as sharp a lens as you'll find, and a steal for around $100. Makes a great lens for shooting candids in low interior lighting. Team this with the N75 for a low-cost, extremely compact system for superior images.

![]() | Nikon 28-200mm f/3.5-5.6G ED IF Autofocus Nikkor Zoom Lens
This 28-200mm (G version) is a very sharp with a extremely useful range for film (full-frame) photography, plus near macro close focusing. Amazingly tiny and light, too. Highly recommended.
|
![]() | Nikon 24-85mm f/3.5-4.5G ED-IF AutoFocus Zoom Nikkor Lens
This is also a very sharp lens that gets wider than the lens above, but gives up the very useful 200m end (which I find essential for candid shots).

![]() | Nikon 24-120mm f/3.5-5.6G ED IF Autofocus VR Nikkor Zoom Lens
Buy new: $498.00 / Used from: $395.00 Both the N75 and F5 can make use of the latest lenses, like this VR zoom featuring Nikon's image stabilization technology. VR gives about a 3 stop advantage (meaning you can hand-hold exposures down to 1/15 sec or so), but VR doesn't of course freeze subject motion. If you take pictures of children or sports action, you need fast lenses and/or flash, plus suitably fast film.

![]() | Nikon SB-600 Speedlight Flash for Nikon Digital SLR Cameras
Buy new: $190.84 / Used from: $169.00 One of the reasons I went with Nikon is their amazing flash system, which allows you to integrate existing and flash lighting to achieve very natural results. This tool will expand your world of great picture taking, and works with the digital Nikon SLRs, too.

![]() | Sto-Fen OM600 Omni-Bounce Diffuser
Buy new: $13.33 Snap this on the SB-600 flash, tilt your flash up 60 degrees, and see how much your flash shots improve. http://www.nikonusa.com/pdf/SB800_techniques.pdf has great flash tips, as do the books in this list.

![]() | Nikon Zoom-Nikkor - Telephoto zoom lens - 70 mm - 200 mm - f/2.8 G ED-IF AF-S VR - Nikon AF-S
At $3000, this outstanding pro-class lens is not for everyone. A favorite of many pros (along with the Nikkor 24-70mm f2.8), it produces exceptional results when mounted on either the F5 (or F6) for film or the D3 for digital. Of course, it'll work on the lowly N75, too.

![]() | Nikon Super CoolScan 5000 ED Film Scanner
