![]() | Ghoul by Michael Slade
Buy used from: $0.01 Dark, twisted, and downright sick horror-mystery. I liked it, but I feel like it could have been a little better. I definitely loved all the Providence/Lovecraft referencesÂ…the authors definitely did their homework. All in all a good mystery, with some surprising turnouts (but not a gigantic twist ending like the first in the series, HEADHUNTER). 1/3 - 1/29
![]() | The Prestige by Christopher Priest
Buy new: $10.17 / Used from: $2.07 FAR different than the movie, yet every bit as mysterious and twisty-turny. In some ways it was even DARKER than the movie. I'm not sure if I'd recommend seeing the movie, or reading the book, first...they're both different enough from each other to almost be separate entities. 1/8 - 2/11
![]() | Bone Volume 5: Rock Jaw: Master of the Eastern Border by Jeff Smith
Buy new: $9.99 / Used from: $2.98 Fun and crazy, with some truly intense scenes. Oddly enough, it's only Smiley Bone and Fone Bone in this one (Phoney Bone, Grandma Ben, etc. aren't in it)! I liked it a lot, though. 2/1 - 2/(sometime before the 10th)
![]() | Deep Storm: A Novel by Lincoln Child
Buy new: $16.47 / Used from: $0.02 WOW! I *have* to check out more of Preston and Child's solo works...this was great! Dazzling (and sometimes confusing) technological references, some intriguing ideas, unbelievable suspense scenes...reminded me of a cross of SPHERE (the Crichton book), THE ABYSS, and CONTACT (at least the movie). I liked it a lot. Highly recommended. 1/31 - 2/22
![]() | 300 by Frank Miller
Buy new: $23.52 / Used from: $7.50 I honestly was not nearly "into it" as I was hoping I was going to be; the dialogue and the mapping of sequences seem to take out the steam which really should have been building in it, like Miller's SIN CITY comics. Then again, I read it in preparation for the movie, and so naturally I've now got higher expectations for that. 2/13 - 2/26 4/10: And as it turns out, the movie *was* better!
![]() | Evil Under the Sun: A Hercule Poirot Mystery (Agatha Christie Collection) by Agatha Christie
Buy new: $9.60 / Used from: $0.16 I was actually disappointed with this one, and as a result, I was disappointed - disappointed that I was actually disappointed with an Agatha Christie novel. How could THAT happen?? Read my review for details on why. 2/12 - 2/27
![]() | Tyrannosaur Canyon by Douglas Preston
Buy new: $7.99 / Used from: $0.01 I liked it - a lot. BUT, this was a solo novel from an author who normally writes with someone else, and it shows - I actually had a better character portrait of the main villain than I did the hero, and there were times (namely at the end) where the writing seemed a bit rushed. Mostly just editing nags - still a great, wild, imaginative read. 3/1 - 3/12.
![]() | Cutthroat by Michael Slade
Buy used from: $0.01 What do Custer's Last Stand, Zodiac (the killer), China/Hong Kong, Darwinian evolution, Bigfoot, and the Royal Canadian Mounted Police have in common? A lot, apparently. Aimed high, didn't quite reach it though. 3/13 - 3/29
![]() | The Walking Dead Vol. 3: Safety Behind Bars by Robert Kirkman
Buy used from: $6.49 I just *have* to know what happens next to Frank Grimes and company! As usual, top-notch writing and artwork, and as usual, I can't understand how hard it was for them to draw plaid shirts properly. Ends on a bit of a cliffhanger. Oh Volume Fou-our... 3/13 - 3/27
![]() | Blood & Water & Othr by Patrick Mcgrath
Buy used from: $2.73 Read two stories on 3/27 to get by, "The Angel" and "The Lost Explorer." Both were dark, profound, and charming. Additionally: "The Black Hand of the Raj" on 3/28, and "Lush Triumphant" 3/30-3/31.
![]() | The White Mountains by John Christopher
Buy new: $5.99 / Used from: $0.37 I've started and stopped reading this numerous times in the (way) past (what can I say? "I was young..."), but now I'm reading it and really getting intrigued. 4/1-4/9
![]() | The Sandman Vol. 2: The Doll's House by Neil Gaiman
Buy new: $13.59 / Used from: $11.47 Looking to be every bit as intriguing, mysterious, and occasionally confusing as PRELUDES AND NOCTURNES. Morpheus rules! 4/3-4/9
![]() | From Hell - New Cover Edition by Alan Moore
Buy new: $23.10 / Used from: $23.05 I just couldn't get into this. The "olde English" prose that was thicker than pizza crust, the near-complete absence of periods on sentences which resulted in still further confusion about what the hell people were talking about, the scruffy, frequently hard-to-understand-just-what-the-hell-I'm-looking-at drawings...ehhhhh, not now, anyway. 4/10-4/12
![]() | The Conqueror Worms by Brian Keene
Buy new: $6.99 / Used from: $0.17 It's starting to drag, even with its at first unsettling premise. Will I continue after today (4/13)? 4/10-
![]() | The Tommyknockers (Signet) by Stephen King
Buy new: $7.99 / Used from: $0.01 Time to jump back into a good ol' King binge! I always enjoy reading his books, and this has long been one I've meant to read. Well, it's happening finally, and although I remember most of what I've read thus far, it's a whole lot more interesting this time around. 4/13-4/27 (4/27: I *LOVED* it!)
![]() | The Walking Dead Vol. 4: The Heart's Desire by Robert Kirkman
Buy new: $10.39 / Used from: $6.49 Volume 3 ended on such a huge cliffhanger, it was a no-brainer that I had to find out what was going to happen next! Already about ten pages in and loving it. Some really unexpected stuff has already happened...I think I even dreamed about it! Probably the most gripping series I've read in a while. 4/14-4/27 (4/27: loved this one too! Deeply emotional...and what a final statement!)
![]() | The Call of Cthulhu and Other Weird Stories (Penguin Twentieth-Century Classics) by Howard Phillips Lovecraft
Buy new: $10.20 / Used from: $7.48 "The Statement of Randolph Carter." The story that introduces this recurring character who becomes key in the Dream Cycle. 4/28
![]() | The Dreams in the Witch House: And Other Weird Stories (Penguin Classics) by H. P. Lovecraft
Buy new: $10.20 / Used from: $7.42 "The Doom That Came to Sarnath," and then "The Cats of Ulthar." These were next in my Dream Cycle readings. 4/29
![]() | The Dream-Quest of Unknown Kadath by H. P. Lovecraft
Buy used from: $1.20 Because stupid Amazon won't let me put two of the same things on one list... I read "Celephais." This story was in the above "Call of Cthulhu" collection. 4/29
![]() | The Lurking Fear and Other Stories by H. P. Lovecraft
Buy used from: $0.54 Another "can't list it twice" case. I read "The Unnameable," which is another Randolph Carter story. My last April read. 4/30
![]() | The Ceremonies by T. E. D. Klein
Buy used from: $0.01 It took me long enough to read this, and I was a little disappointed (see my review), but I'm glad I finally read it, and I did like it overall. 5/1-5/30
![]() | The White People and Other Stories: Vol. 2 of the Best Weird Tales of Arthur Machen (Call of Cthulhu Fiction) by Arthur Machen
Buy new: $10.17 / Used from: $8.85 I started reading "The White People," because it plays such a key recurring reference in THE CEREMONIES, which, as much as I've been enjoying it, I'm glad I'm finally about to finish. 5/27-5/31
![]() | The Doom That Came to Sarnath (A Del Rey Book) by H.P. Lovecraft
Buy new: $6.99 / Used from: $1.26 "Can't list twice," blah-blah-blah... I read "Polaris" as my first read of June. 6/1.
![]() | Choke by Chuck Palahniuk
Buy new: $10.17 / Used from: $7.45 While I wait for the new Repairman Jack novel, BLOODLINE, to ship sometime soon, I decided to finally read more of Palahniuk. Repulsive, funny, weird, depressing...and one hell of a wild ride. 6/2-6/8
![]() | Egyptian Musk Perfume Oil -- 1/3 oz Roller Bottle -- free Priority Mail with $60 order
Buy new: $9.00 To take the place of 'Blood and Water and Other Tales,' by Patrick McGrath. This time: "Ambrose Syme." 6/9
![]() | Tales of the Cthulhu Mythos by H. P. Lovecraft
Buy new: $10.17 / Used from: $6.50 I'm reading "The Call of Cthulhu." Classic, and terrific as always. 6/10-6/11
![]() | The Walking Dead Vol. 5: The Best Defense by Robert Kirkman
Buy new: $10.39 / Used from: $6.49 Sheesh, and I thought some of the stuff in LOST was amazing and horrible (in a great, fictional way). This is one hell of a depressing entry in the series, but made all the more engaging by ending with "To Be Continued..." NEXT! 6/11-6/25
![]() | Bloodline: A Repairman Jack Novel (Repairman Jack) by F. Paul Wilson
Buy new: $17.13 / Used from: $3.94 I actually reading the Borderlands Press first edition of this (the rest of the world has to wait until October to get to read the mass market hardcover, tee-hee!), and for some reason Amazon only let me select this edition on here. Oh well. ABSOLUTELY amazing, heart-pounding suspense, and one HELL of an ending that raises more questions than it answers. 6/12-6/21
![]() | The Day of the Triffids (20th Century Rediscoveries) by John Wyndham
Buy new: $11.20 / Used from: $7.00 A great beginning, but at this point in time, I just can't read it...just not what I need. 6/12-6/13
![]() | Stardust by Neil Gaiman
Buy new: $11.16 / Used from: $4.39 In preparation for the upcoming movie, I'd decided to read this. Not bad, but by no means anything to write home about. Fun, fresh adventure with some nice twists. I hope I'll like the movie more, however. 6/18-6/28
![]() | The Return Of The Sorcerer: The Best Of Clark Ashton Smith by Clark Ashton Smith
Buy new: $10.17 Read the title story, in the 'Tales of the Cthulhu Mythos' collection. Although the climax was a little disappointing, the buildup to it was nothing short of CREEPY. 6/21
![]() | TALES OF THE CTHULHU MYTHOS - Volume (1) (i) One: The Call of Cthulhu; The Return of the Sorcerer; Ubbo Sathla; The Black Stone; The Hounds of Tindalos; The Space Eaters; The Dweller in Darkness; Beyond the Threshold; The Salem Horror; The Haunter by H. P. (with Clark Ashton Smith; Robert E. Howard; Frank Belknap Long; August Derleth; Henry Kuttner; J. Vernon Shea) Lovecraft
Buy used from: $4.00 Read "Ubbo-Sathla" today out of 'Tales of the Cthulhu Mythos.' Great imagery, definitely "weird," but not quite as creepy as I'd hoped it would be. Maybe "The Black Stone," by Robert E. Howard, will be better. 6/22
![]() | Nameless Cults: The Complete Cthulhu Mythos Tales Of Robert E. Howard (Call of Cthulhu Fiction) by Robert E. Howard
Buy used from: $30.00 Read "The Black Stone" out of 'Tales of the Cthulhu Mythos.' Seriously creepy, and so much more graphic than I'd ever expect a story from its era to be. I liked it a lot. 6/22
![]() | The Hounds of Tindalos
Buy used from: $9.00 Read this title story out of 'Tales of the Cthulhu Mythos.' Once again: so-so ending, but man, what a buildup. Pretty creepy. 6/28
![]() | Digital Concepts Overnight AA Rechargeable Battery Charger with 4 AA 2500 mAh Batteries
Buy new: $12.85 / Used from: $7.99 Read "The Space-Eaters," by Frank Belknap Long, out of 'Tales of the Cthulhu Mythos.' Yet again: great buildup (the opening scene was downright CREEPY), cool ideas...and it ends on a whimper. What is up with this?! 6/29
![]() | Off Season by Jack Ketchum
Buy new: $6.99 / Used from: $1.84 Good beginning, but then it quickly...well, it's fast-paced, it's GORY as hell, with some unexpected and terrible things that happen...but ultimately it left me desiring more. 7/1-7/5
![]() | The Barrens and Others by F. Paul Wilson
Buy new: $15.25 / Used from: $9.99 Out of CTHULHU 2000, I re-read F. Paul Wilson's "The Barrens." I've read it before, and I enjoyed it a lot, but man, this time around is just...wow! One hell of a creepy and well-written yarn, with quite a memorable ending for a post-Lovecraft story! Natural for FPW. 7/6
![]() | Cthulhu 2000 by Various
Buy new: $11.66 / Used from: $4.61 Read "Pickman's Modem," by Lawrence Watt-Evans, on 7/6 (weird and darkly humorous). From the night of 7/6 into the afternoon of 7/7, I read Basil Copper's "Shaft Number 247" (fairly boring, way too vague to be a true Cthulhu Mythos story).
![]() | Wormwood: A Collection of Short Stories by Poppy Z. Brite
Buy new: $7.99 / Used from: $0.28 Still in CTHULHU 2000, I read Poppy Z. Brite's "His Mouth Will Taste of Wormwood" - sensual and eerie, very interesting. 7/7
![]() | The Necronomicon by Simon
Buy new: $7.99 / Used from: $0.69 CTHULHU 2000 still: I read Fred Chappell's "The Adder" that night - a cool tale of The Necronomicon, with chilling ideas. My last read on 7/7.
