Buy new: $739.95 / Used from: $799.00 This is the only dedicated macro lens that autofocuses with the Nikon D40. If you're serious about macro photography, I suggest to get this lens.
NOTE!
If you are just a amateur and want to take cheap macro shots, I suggest getting a reversing ring or close up lens instead.

 | Nikon 50mm f/1.8D AF Nikkor Lens for Nikon Digital SLR Cameras
Buy new: $114.95 / Used from: $105.97 This lens is very good in low light conditions. Although it does not autofocus with the D40, it is a pretty good and inexpensive lens.

 | Sigma EX DG 52mm Multi-Coated UV Filter
Buy new: $22.95 Protect your camera from UV light and get this filter. It also stops dirt from getting onto the lens. This is the best lens for your money.
An extra note here: it will only fit on lenses with a lens attachment size of 52mm. The only lens on this page that does not fit with this filter is the 105mm macro lens.

Buy new: $99.95 / Used from: $89.89 This is the best flash unit you'll find for the Nikon D40. It's small, inexpensive, and powerful. It is really all you need.
Some people ask, "What about the SB-600 or SB-800?"
These flash units are big and bulky (and expensive!). I'd recommend not getting them because many people really don't need all the extra features.
