Canon EOS 30D 8.2MP Digital SLR Camera (Body Only)Canon EOS 30D 8.2MP Digital SLR Camera (Body Only)
Buy new: $699.00 / Used from: $525.00
Good "starter" camera, and good for a backup. The camera is fast enough for many sports, the high ISO settings work well in crappy lighting, and the resolution is high enough you can do a little cropping if needed and still get a cover shot. Downside is the camera is not as rugged as the pro models. Buy it to start, keep it as a backup.
Canon EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS USM Telephoto Zoom Lens for Canon SLR CamerasCanon EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS USM Telephoto Zoom Lens for Canon SLR Cameras
Buy new: $1,534.00 / Used from: $1,200.00
Probably my most used lens. I will probably never buy any lens slower than a 2.8 again. Works well on indoor sports events, concerts, fashion and portrait work, etc... Lets you throw backgrounds way out of focus for beautiful portrait shots.
Canon EF 16-35mm f/2.8L USM Ultra Wide Angle Zoom Lens for Canon SLR CamerasCanon EF 16-35mm f/2.8L USM Ultra Wide Angle Zoom Lens for Canon SLR Cameras
This lens give you a good wide angle view, even on a small sensor camera. Coupled with the 70-200, you can cover most common focal lenghts. Often, these are the only two lenses I carry. At "event" type shoots, or sports, I put each lens on a body and carry both over my neck and shoulder.
Canon Speedlite 580EX Flash for Canon Pro1, Pro 90, G Series, and EOS SLR Digital CamerasCanon Speedlite 580EX Flash for Canon Pro1, Pro 90, G Series, and EOS SLR Digital Cameras
Buy used from: $319.00
Buy two or three of them along with the Canon STE2. Use one on the camera if you have to, but with the wireless capabilities, it is like having your own ultra-portable studio kit. You can get real creative with this rig. I've had people hand hold them, gaff taped them to posts on the side of rodeo arenas, etc...

Canon EF 50mm f1.4 USM Standard & Medium Telephoto Lens for Canon SLR CamerasCanon EF 50mm f1.4 USM Standard & Medium Telephoto Lens for Canon SLR Cameras
Buy new: $319.95 / Used from: $299.99
If you feel you must have something to fill between 35 and 70 mm focal lenghts, this is what I have. Many use a 24-70 2.8. Great lens, but I can buy this one and put the $700 differece elsewhere. Plus it gives me an ultra low light lens with the 1.4 aperature. Many consider this the sharpest overall lens Canon makes.
Domke 725-310 FA-031 U.S. Post Office Shoulder PadDomke 725-310 FA-031 U.S. Post Office Shoulder Pad
Buy new: $13.96
My favorite shoulder strap after years of searching. Good grip, adjusts out nice and long to wear "bandolier" style over arm and neck.
Tiffen 77mm UV Protection FilterTiffen 77mm UV Protection Filter
Buy new: $14.74
Put one on the front of every lens and leave it there as protection. For filters, get one each of ND .3, .6, .9, a circular polarizer, and a graduated nd .6 The ND filters let you use slow shutter speeds in brighter light, to blur moving water for example. The polarizer removes glare, and the gradND lets you balance out a blown out sky.
Lexar Media 4GB 80X PRO SERIES CF-CARD WA ENABLED ( CFB4GB-80-380 )Lexar Media 4GB 80X PRO SERIES CF-CARD WA ENABLED ( CFB4GB-80-380 )
Suck it up and budget a grand and buy 10 cards. You can many times shoot all day and leave your laptop behind.
National Geographic NG 2475 Earth Explorer Medium Shoulder BagNational Geographic NG 2475 Earth Explorer Medium Shoulder Bag
Buy new: Too low to display / Used from: $79.00
This is my favorite bag, along with the Domke F2, to work out of. I'm not a fan of carrying everything I own on every shoot. I pick and choose what I need each day and put it in this bag. I can carry the setup that I use 90% of the time easily and still have room for some extras.
Canon EOS 1D Mark III 10.1MP Digital SLR Camera (Body Only)Canon EOS 1D Mark III 10.1MP Digital SLR Camera (Body Only)
Buy new: $3,699.99 / Used from: $3,499.00
Overall, for my work, the best choice out there. 10 mp is going to be more than enough for 95% of my work. When I need more, I'll just rent a H3 for a day and build the cost into the bid. The difference in resolution between this and the 1ds to me isn't enough to justify the extra $$. The frame rate though is a compelling reason to choose this camera first.
Moleskine Reporter, Small Ruled NotebookMoleskine Reporter, Small Ruled Notebook
Buy new: $9.76 / Used from: $9.56
These notebooks are awesome, stiff backs, durable, good looking, nice paper, a small pocket for stray receipts, ticket stubs, business cards, etc... This size is good to keep in your pocket, bag, or glove box. I also sometimes use the "steno pad" sized ones to keep notes on a particular film or photo project - journal style.
