![]() | Sony Alpha A700 12.24MP Digital SLR Camera (Body Only)
Buy new: Too low to display / Used from: $659.99 The body. By far the best of the Alphas (ignoring A900). Unlike the 200/300/350 it has a depth of field button - I find this critical for macro work, eye-start focusing does't activate unless gripping the camera, MLU, better ergonomics, and, frankly, just a better camera.
![]() | Sony VG-C70AM Alpha Vertical Grip
Buy new: $199.00 The vertical grip for the A700. Easier portrait (vertical) picture taking, double battery life, and the grip has all the functions you are used to on the built in camera. This does make the camera very large. I don't notice the additional weight even with two batteries.
![]() | Tamron Zoom Super Wide Angle SP AF 17-50mm f/2.8 XR Di II LD Aspherical [IF] Autofocus Lens for Sony & Minolta Digital SLR Cameras
One of the better sub-500$ lenses available. Excellent walk-around lens - I'd rather have a constant f2.8 than a longer reach in most cases. I originally obtained a bad copy - sent it Tamron and they repaired it - the lens is sharp and fast. APS-C
![]() | Tamron AF 70-300mm f/4.0-5.6 Di LD Macro Zoom Lens for Konica Minolta and Sony Digital SLR Cameras
Buy new: $156.67 Price to product, probably the best value - especially considering how cheap this one is. Can't afford the G 70-300mm lens? This is the one. I've read that the Sigms 70-300mm APO has less purple fringing (a problem on my copy of this lens) and it is only a little more expensive (for a lens) - of course it is heavier too and I've read that gears sometimes strip on the Sigma. FF
![]() | Sigma 70-300mm f/4-5.6 DG APO Macro Telephoto Zoom Lens for Minolta and Sony SLR Cameras
Buy new: $207.67 / Used from: $179.99 I've not used this lens. It may be the better option than the Tamron, but it is heavier and marginally more expensive. Make sure you buy this version (APO) and not the cheaper one. In light of the reviews, I'd probably buy this one over the Tamron, but either are good choices and most of the negatives with the Tamron won't be noticed in a printed photo. FF
![]() | Sony SAL70300G 70-300mm f/4.5-5.6 SSM ED G-Series Compact Super Telephoto Zoom Lens
Buy new: $749.99 If you can afford it, the lens is very nice with SSM - as you would expect from a G-class lens. Beware though, the hood is very large and when attached it looks like you're carrying around a small canon. Been thinking about this one alot... FF
![]() | Sony SAL70400G 70-400mm f/4-5.6 G SSM Lens (Black)
Buy new: $1,499.99 First $1000 plus lens I'm seriously considering. I suppose part of the question now is whether to go with the 70-300G and then the Tamron 200-500mm as a two lens compromise that gives G quality to most of the range but still have 500mm in the kit.
![]() | Sigma 50-500mm f/4-6.3 EX DG HSM APO RF Telephoto Zoom Lens for Minolta and Sony SLR Cameras
Buy new: $896.82 The "Bigma". Your one lens solution. Huge range (10x!). Its biggest draw back is its heft. Many will say you can't shoot handheld with it, but an equal number say you can (probably depends on your strength and endurance). I'd suggest a monopod or tripod though just in case. I'm waiting till the Sony 70-400mm G comes out before buying a super long tele now. FF
![]() | Tamron AF 200-500mm f/5.0-6.3 Di LD SP FEC (IF) Lens for Konica Minolta and Sony Digital SLR Cameras
Buy new: $813.00 If the Bigma is too heavy, this is the other top 500mm zoom contender. Reportedly sharper than the Bigma... I've seen drool worthy samples from both. I'm waiting till the Sony 70-400mm G comes out before buying a super long tele now. FF
![]() | Tamron AF 90mm f/2.8 Di SP A/M 1:1 Macro Lens for Konica Minolta and Sony Digital SLR Cameras
Buy new: $489.99 An awesome macro lens. You can't go wrong with this lens. Probably the more popular choice over the more expensive Sony 100mm. FF
![]() | Sony 100mm f/2.8 Macro Lens for Sony Alpha Digital SLR Camera
Buy new: Too low to display A great lens for macro, but I frankly don't see enough quality difference between it and the 90mm Tamron to make it worth it. You can probably find an old Minolta 100mm for cheaper as well - I use an old Minolta, which is fantastic. FF
![]() | Tamron AF 180mm f/3.5 Di SP A/M FEC LD (IF) 1:1 Macro Lens for Konica Minolta and Sony Digital SLR Cameras
Buy new: $609.78 I like Macro and I've enjoyed the Minolta 100mm so much that I think a little extra reach might be very enjoyable. FF
![]() | Tamron SP Autofocus 24-135mm f/3.5-5.6 AD Aspherical (IF) Lens for Konica Minolta and Sony Digital SLR Cameras
Buy new: $368.35 / Used from: $249.99 This is probably the better choice over the Sony 24-105mm with the extra reach. Haven't found enough direct comparisons to be confident. Not a bad walk-around lens; although, if you aren't going full frame, I'd probably just buy the 18-250mm. FF
![]() | Manfrotto 680B Monopod (4-SCTN) - Replaces 680 (Black)
Buy new: $60.00 Monopod. Slightly shorter than the 681B, but fits into a carry on (diagonally). The 681B does not. Makes sure you get a head.
![]() | Sony NPFM500H Alpha Rechargeable Battery Pack
Buy new: $49.87 / Used from: $25.00 Battery life is excellent, but it is always good to have a spare.
![]() | Sandisk Extreme USB 2.0 3in1 Card Reader (SDDRX3-3IN1-901, US Retail Package)
Buy new: $109.95 Reads CompactFlash cards. Faster than connecting the camera to the computer and doesn't drain battery.
![]() | SanDisk 8 GB Extreme III CF Card SDCFX3-008G-A31 (Retail Package)
Buy new: $35.29 / Used from: $41.99 If you are shooting raw, you are going to want a large card. 4 GB at the min. If you shoot raw+jpeg, it is absolutely needed.
![]() | Lowepro Fastpack 350 (Black)
Buy new: $112.95 Nice pack and quick camera access. Straps are easier to control than the Tamron Adventure 9. It's missing the ability to carry a tripod though. Bit of warning, the A700 moves a bit in the bag (plenty of padding though) without a vertical grip being attached - with the grip, a nice fit. The upper compartment is big enough for lunch :) and the laptop compartment should make flying a easier.
![]() | Tamrac 3537077 Express 7 Camera Bag (Khaki)
Buy new: $48.95 / Used from: $41.95 Good bag for a walk around town. With the grip things are cramped, but workable. Doesn't look like a camera bag (plus for me). Fits the A700 and three lenses easily - not G or the larger constant f/2.8 lenses though (70-200)...
![]() | Sony SAL-20F28 20mm f/2.8 Wide Angle Lens for Sony Alpha Digital SLR Camera
Buy new: Too low to display / Used from: $469.00 Prime wide lens. Gets excellent reviews. FF
![]() | Tamron AF 11-18mm f/4.5-5.6 Di-II SP LD Aspherical (IF) Lens for Konica Minolta and Sony Digital SLR Cameras
Buy new: $563.81 You basically have three choices for an extreme wide zoom (something I want to try): Tamron or Sony 11-18mm, Sigma 10-20mm, and Sigma 12-24mm. Only the last is full frame. Of these, I'd probably buy the Tamron - reviews suggest that it's sharper and has few distortions than the Sigma (cheaper than the Sony). There's a new 10-24mm Tamron coming out - should be an improvement over this lens. APS-C
![]() | Sigma 10-20mm f/4-5.6 EX DC Lens for Minolta and Sony Digital SLR Cameras
Buy new: $449.00 / Used from: $791.27 This would probably be by choice over the 12-24mm Sigma (but I have no plans to go full frame). If you are going FF, the 12-24mm is the choice. Gets good reviews and provides that extreme wide angle. APS-C
![]() | Sony 50mm f/1.4 Lens for Sony Alpha Digital SLR Camera
Buy new: $349.99 The old minolta 50mm f/1.4 usually sell for $200-250 (and going up) on ebay now. Lens is sharp and fast. Everything you should expect. The 17-50mm Tamron when stopped down can gives me pretty good quality shots at 50mm so I'm not in a hurry on this one. FF
![]() | Sony SAL-1680Z 16-80mm f/3.5-4.5 Carl Zeiss Vario-Sonnar T DT Zoom Lens for Sony Alpha Digital SLR Camera
Buy new: $699.99 / Used from: $679.98 Highly praised Zeiss lens. Tamron 17-50mm does me just fine - and it is a constant f/2.8. APS-C
![]() | Tamron 18-250mm F/3.5-6.3 AF Di-II LD Aspherical (IF) Macro Lens for Konica Minolta and Sony Alpha Digital SLR Cameras
Buy new: $493.04 Tamron version of the Sony lens or Sony version of the Tamron - I'm not sure. The ultimate for "walking around". It won't match the quality of a specialty lens, but it is probably the best generalist. APS-C
![]() | Sony SAL18250 Alpha DT 18-250mm f/3.5-6.3 High Magnification Zoom Lens
Buy new: $549.99 / Used from: $520.00 Supposedly marginally faster than the Tamron, but same quality (remember the Tamron has that 6 year warranty though). The ultimate for "walking around". It won't match the quality of a specialty lens, but it is probably the best generalist. APS-C
![]() | Tamron AF 70-200mm f/2.8 Di LD IF Macro Lens for Sony Digital SLR Cameras
Buy new: $699.00 It's out. It's got good reviews. It's cheaper than Sony ($1800) - shocker I know . Should be a worthy replacement of the Beercan (minolta 70-210mm f/4) if you don't mind the weight and not having SSM. FF
![]() | Sigma 70-200mm f/2.8 DG HSM II Macro Zoom Lens for Sony Digital SLR Cameras
Buy new: $788.94 Competitor to the Tamron 70-200 f/2.8 and the Sony. From some example photos I've seen, I don't find the Sony worth the extra money for bump in image quality (IQ). The Sigma has SSM (HSM) vs the Tamron that doesn't, but the Tamron is supposed to have better IQ. May focus better in low light, which is what I want in a constant f/2.8
![]() | Sony 70-200mm f/2.8 SSM Lens for Sony Alpha Digital SLR Camera
Buy new: $1,699.99 G, f/2.8, SSM... Sigh. Both Tamron and Sigma have versions, though the Tamron doesn't have the SSM/HSM. FF
![]() | Sony 24 -70mm f/2.8 Carl Zeiss Vario Sonnar T Zoom Lens for Sony Alpha Digital SLR Cameras
Buy new: $1,749.00 I'd love to have this lens, but simply cannot afford it. From all accounts this lens is fantastic. What you would expect from Zeiss. FF
![]() | Sony SAL1635Z 16-35mm f/2.8 ZA Lens
Buy new: $1,799.99 What is there to say? Constant f/2.8. Full frame. SSM. Zeiss. This covers about 24-52mm on APS-C. Again, love to have, but a lot to put out. FF
![]() | Manfrotto 190XPROB 3 Section Aluminum Pro Tripod
Buy new: $159.90 / Used from: $154.49 Don't forget a head. I'd buy this one or the 055xPROB
![]() | Manfrotto 486RC2 Compact Ball Head with RC2 Rapid Connect System
Buy new: $70.00 / Used from: $55.00 A head for the tripod or monopod. This or the 488 would be my choice. The quick release works very well and it is easy to attach and release the camera.
![]() | Opteka Remote Release Cord Sony Alpha DSLR A700, A350, A300, A200, A100 SLR Digital Camera
Buy new: $14.95 Far cheaper than the Sony version. If you have a tripod, I can't think of reason you wouldn't want a remote. Don't buy the Sony version. You would just be paying for the name "Sony". Please don't encourage idiotic pricing.
![]() | Sony Alpha DSLRA300K 10.2MP Digital SLR Camera with Super SteadyShot Image Stabilization with DT 18-70mm f/3.5-5.6 Zoom Lens
Buy new: Too low to display / Used from: $519.99 I'd prefer this over the A350. It is cheaper (even with the kit lens) and 10mp is more than enough. The VG-B30AM is the vertical grip for the A200/A300/A350
![]() | Sony Alpha DSLRA350 14.2MP Digital SLR Camera with Super SteadyShot Image Stabilization (Body Only)
Buy new: Too low to display / Used from: $648.00 I'd probably by the A300, but some may prefer the greater resolution on the A350. Good choices either way. The VG-B30AM is the optional vertical grip for the A200/A300/A350.
![]() | Sony Alpha A900 24.6MP Digital SLR Camera (Black)
Buy new: $2,949.99 / Used from: $2,699.99 The Flagship of the Sony line. It's expensive compared to the A700, but Full Frame. I'm perfectly content with my A700.
![]() | Sony Alpha VG-C90AM Vertical Grip for DSLRA900 (Black)
Buy new: $279.95 The vertical grip... makes the large camera even larger. Same advantages as the vertical grip for the A700.
![]() | Sony SAL-300F28G G Series 300mm f/2.8 Super Telephoto Lens for Sony Alpha Digital SLR Camera
Buy new: $5,999.99 Yeah. Right.
