Canon EOS 5D 12.8 MP Digital SLR Camera (Body Only)Canon EOS 5D 12.8 MP Digital SLR Camera (Body Only)
Buy new: $1,999.95 / Used from: $1,250.00
The 40D is a great camera, but I went with the 5D because a) pro photography means larger format sensors, b) 1 stop better on handling noise, c) even though new 5D will come out this year, by the time it has at least 6 months in the market will be 12 to 18 months from now and at that point I can use this camera as a backup. You can get the 5D and 24-105 lens as a kit and save $300.
Canon EF 24-105mm f/4 L IS USM Lens for Canon EOS SLR CamerasCanon EF 24-105mm f/4 L IS USM Lens for Canon EOS SLR Cameras

Vs the 24-70 f/2.8. Both are L glass. F/2.8 1 stop better in low light for SUBJECT motion, but no IS means the 105 is about 1 stop better for camera shake. Subject motion at medium telephoto a little less of an issue. The extra length on the 105 means less lens changes. Also is lighter. So I went with 105. Also, I believe in having some PRIME lenses for dealing with really low light.
Canon EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS USM Telephoto Zoom Lens for Canon SLR CamerasCanon EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS USM Telephoto Zoom Lens for Canon SLR Cameras
Buy new: $1,534.00 / Used from: $1,200.00
This or the f/4 version which is 1.5 pounds lighter and $650 cheaper? I felt like LONG telephoto needs the extra stop to freeze subject motion since you are likely to be close up. Also, I didn't want to spring for a 200mm prime lens for low light. Lastly, with the 24-105 in my bag rather than the 24-70, I don't have to pull this out at 70, but only if low light or if I need to go past 105.
Tamron AF 17-35mm f/2.8-4.0 Di LD SP Aspherical (IF) Ultra Wide Angle Zoom Lens for Canon Digital SLR CamerasTamron AF 17-35mm f/2.8-4.0 Di LD SP Aspherical (IF) Ultra Wide Angle Zoom Lens for Canon Digital SLR Cameras
Buy new: $299.00
I didn't want to spend an arm and a leg for extra wide angle since the 5D is full frame and the 24-105 lens is the same as a 15mm lens on the 40D (1.6 crop factor). So with this lens on a 5D I can get the same wide angle as a 10mm lens on the 40D.

So when you are in low light, there is nothing better than a great prime lens. This baby is well rated (www.fredmiranda.com), relatively inexpensive and goes a full stop below the 70-200 f/2.8 and two stops below the 24-105 f/4. Great to have it when I need it.
Canon EF 50mm f/1.8 II Camera LensCanon EF 50mm f/1.8 II Camera Lens
Buy new: $84.95 / Used from: $82.99
Another prime for low light. This very inexpensive lens (under $100) takes great pictures. So if my 24-105 f/4L IS can't handle the low light, between this lens and the 100 f/2 along with the superb noise handling of the 5D at 1600 ISO I can go without flash in very low light.

The classic flash for Canon.
ExpoDisc Digital White Balance Filter, 77mmExpoDisc Digital White Balance Filter, 77mm
Buy new: $99.99
If you haven't used an expodisc for white balance you need to. It saves tons of post processing and achieves much more consistent results. Also, all the lenses in this list are 77mm (except the 2 primes) - so one size will do. If you have smaller lenses, just use the 77mm and hold it against the lens rather than buy another expodisc.
SanDisk 8GB/15MB Ultra II CF Card ( SDCFH-008G-A11, US Retail Package )SanDisk 8GB/15MB Ultra II CF Card ( SDCFH-008G-A11, US Retail Package )
Buy new: $31.01 / Used from: $52.07
I got three of these. I figure I can get about 400 5D Raws on each one of these. That gives me 1200 for a wedding and I can offload to my laptop as well if I need to go beyond that. I will probably pick up at least 2 more of these over time. Also, didn't go for the super high speed ones since this isn't sports photography where we are trying to clear the camera buffer for continuous shooting.

I just received this backpack and it looks reasonable for transporting the equipment on this list.
Manfrotto 725B Digi Tripod with Integrated Ball Head with Dove Tail Plate and Carrying Bag (Black)Manfrotto 725B Digi Tripod with Integrated Ball Head with Dove Tail Plate and Carrying Bag (Black)
Buy new: $115.00 / Used from: $89.00
I didn't actually order this tripod, but it is a key piece of equipment. I want one that is tall (I am 6' 6" and I don't want to be bent over the camera all the time). I want a ball head for easy adjustment. Lastly, it must be able to hold the 5 to 6 pounds which is the 5D plus the 3.25 lbs 70-200mm f/2.8 USM IS lens.
