Arguably the best independent film I've ever seen. It is rare for a film to move my heart so profoundly. Authentic characters and beautiful lensing. The perfect movie to experience and talk about with friends.

Visionary, the movie is flawless, unless you try to look at it from a moral perspective. Then, the choices of the complex characters could fuel a thesis paper.
The WarThe War
Buy new: $8.49 / Used from: $3.09
This underappreciated movie really surprised me with its depth and ended up getting me all teary-eyed. A powerful message about peace. That is the legacy we fathers must leave for our children. It's not a kid's movie though, and it is best to watch when you don't have even the slightest amount of cynicism in you, otherwise a few of the scenes might make you groan. So just let it carry you away.
Gladiator (Two-Disc Collector's Edition)Gladiator (Two-Disc Collector's Edition)

This is filmmaking on a grand level. It lacks the heart of Spartacus, but still is a rousing spectacle with a heroic story arc.

There are scenes in this movie that fill me with such sanguine happiness, they are just so beautiful, fanciful and radiant. But thrown into the innocence, in typical French fashion, is incongruously strong sexuality. This can yank you out of the fairy tale. Still, this movie makes me too want to cultivate an enjoyment in the little things and become a habitual do-gooder.
RatatouilleRatatouille

I will strive to avoid cooking metaphors here, it would just be too easy. Very enjoyable and cleverly imaginative. This might just be the third best Pixar movie, after The Incredibles and Toy Story. I laughed the most at the old lady and her shotgun and the short "Lifted."
Parenthood (Special Edition)Parenthood (Special Edition)
Buy new: $15.49 / Used from: $8.69
I like the roller coaster too. While there are several morally unsound elements inserted throughout the movie, I am such a sucker for how it honestly captures the insanity of being a parent, and in the end the message on the importance of family just gets me.

Now _this_ I can understand why people call a classic. "What do I have to do, draw you a picture?!" Nope, what we don't see imprints itself on the mind just as much as the gorgeous landscapes and the conflicted characters. Will this movie ever be forgotten? "That'll be the day."
Do the Right ThingDo the Right Thing
Buy new: $10.99 / Used from: $5.99
Definitely a thought-provoking, dicussion-spurring film, especially with the two quotes at the end. A unique vision certainly helps you enter into the conflict and the heart-breaking climax. Do I agree completely with what Spike Lee is saying? No. But that doesn't inhibit one from enjoying this movie.
Curse of the Golden FlowerCurse of the Golden Flower
Buy new: $8.49 / Used from: $2.43
There are times when the camera work or the CGI just don't mesh well with such a regal tale, but the opulence of the sets and costumes and the well-written story pulled me in. A noble effort at crafting a tradedy. Visually, this is exactly what you expect from Zhang Yimou.
TransformersTransformers
Buy new: $14.99 / Used from: $4.73
The CGI in this movie is so mind-blowing, usually in sheer entertainment, but sometimes their is such a visual entanglement, you're really not sure what is going on.
Il PostinoIl Postino
Buy new: $10.49 / Used from: $6.41
Il Postino and Cinema Paradiso share several similar elements, but I feel this movie's love letter to poetry is more convincing than Paradiso's tribute to movies. In addition, the writing is more wry and the characters are more relatable.

Another amazing score by Morricone that sweeps you away at the conclusion of the film. It depicts the powerful impact a paternal influence can have and reminds us not to cut out the moments of love from our life, even though they may be painful.
Born into BrothelsBorn into Brothels

This is an important documentary, though it is not as well constructed as others. It makes you realize how much we have to be thankful for.
Smokey and the Bandit - Special EditionSmokey and the Bandit - Special Edition
Buy new: $9.99 / Used from: $3.99
The chase is such juvenile fun, it would have been perfect as a family movie if all the language and innuendo weren't thrown in. Oh, silly STDs. You can't be bothered with in this movie.
Dr. Strangelove or How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb (Special Edition)Dr. Strangelove or How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb (Special Edition)

You would think "precious bodily fluids" would only be funny once, maybe twice, but it got snickers every time and epitomized the absurdity of the whole situation. Is it one of the best comedies ever? It's a smart script, but great comedies call for more than 10 chuckles. It is however, one of the best opening credit sequences ever.
AwakeningsAwakenings

It's memorable, but falls short of greatness. Williams in yet another wise doctor role (his two modes: wise bearded man, annoying man-child). DeNiro's seeming desire to imitate Dustin Hoffman's Rain Man success. The minor roles were cast so well (Marge Simpson was the best part of the movie) it's a shame that the two main actors are unable to make you forget you're watching Williams and DeNiro.
ThereseTherese

Peaceful in its simplicity, grounded by a fervent and capable performance from the lead actress. I am curious to see the 1986 French film on her life, since everyone says it is superior.

What can you say? It is a tense, emotional experience reliving the emotions of this day and listening to the phone calls made to family. At first I felt it was too soon. But the Bonus Features contained interviews with the family who found the film cathartic and felt it was time to document what happened, lest we forget.

Incredibly hilarious and horribly inappropriate. There's a great deal of genius in this movie, but there's also a whole lot of wrong. I feel guilty having this and "Therese" on the same list.

My childhood love is still there for Johnny 5, but I couldn't believe the amount of language contained in this movie that otherwise would have been perfect for kid-viewage. I can't imagine that adults were the target audience (the plot is fairly moronic and the robot is by far the best actor). I won't trust any 80's PG rated movies in the future.
Flight of the NavigatorFlight of the Navigator
Buy new: $9.99 / Used from: $6.38
I can see why this movie has nostalgia value; the premise is interesting (and was subsequently ripped off for the series "The 4400"). But the child actor's performance is one of the most painful in memory and Paul Reubens is equally painful as robot Max. Only Robin Williams could have been more annoying.
The Pursuit of Happyness (Widescreen Edition)The Pursuit of Happyness (Widescreen Edition)

It's a Will Smith movie, so of course it,s entertaining and the ending was very touching. Let's not take his talent for granted. But it was quite stressful to watch at times, and the story seemed more on a TV-movie level.
The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou - Criterion CollectionThe Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou - Criterion Collection

I'm concerned about myself. I am starting to get very sleepy halfways through movies. This one starts off slow and subtle and would be easy to write off, but the rescue scene alone makes this movie worthwhile. And really, how many filmmakers are shooting movies about marine biologists? Kudos for trying something different.

The guy in me says this was a sweet, sweet movie, another perfect Tarantino chronological construction. The human says this is pretty sick, especially when you see the advertisements for the action figures so you can act out your favorite scenes.

Sure, it's undeniably funny, but I can't recall a movie I raised my eyebrows or slapped my forehead more during because it is just so unbelievable that somebody would go so far over the line. If two men running naked through a hotel is the comedy hit of 2007, what sort of things will we be seeing ten years from now?
Control RoomControl Room

An interesting political documentary in that it doesn't force its message down your throat and lets you take what is presnted and make your own decisions. All media has bias.
Stranger Than FictionStranger Than Fiction

Overall, the quirkiness of "Stranger than Fiction" makes for an enjoyable stroll, though I felt the relationships formed were often inexplicable. It's not a good sign when a wristwatch is my favorite character.

Heartbreaking sacrifice and loss are preserved for history. I would recommend watching it in 2 separate one hour sittings, because it has a slow pace.
Secondhand Lions (New Line Platinum Series)Secondhand Lions (New Line Platinum Series)

A marginally decent family film, but I certainly wouldn't watch it again without a kid in the room. Osment's ham-handed performance makes a convincing argument as to why child actors should not be elligible for Oscar nominations, showing his genius in "Sixth Sense" had to be a fluke.

Will Ferrell's comedies are wildly inconsistent, mustering *perhaps* a ratio of 1:30 of funny jokes versus completely unfunny lines. This one had its funniest joke in the first 30 seconds: "America is all about speed. Hot, nasty, bada** speed." -Eleanor Roosevelt, 1936
MurderballMurderball

There were two directors, and it showed in this uneven film. Director 1 pumped in adrenaline and gritty realism, while Director 2 thought the movie needed more heart and tacked on things superflous to the Paralympics story.

Mr. Guest, as someone who considers himself a huge fan of your movies, I implore you to return to the mockumentary format for your next picture! The improv and the eccentric characters just didn't work quite as well here.

I think it had a lot of potential, but it's not handled with any amount of tenderness and seems to be written by a 14 year old boy at times, squandering what charm it does have. People getting hit with a bat IS funny though.
Blades of Glory (Widescreen Edition)Blades of Glory (Widescreen Edition)

Just because you admit it's an over the top comedy, doesn't mean there is not still shame to be passed around for this. New Year's Resolution: take a break from Will Ferrell movies. Finally, Pam, you broke my heart. You sold yourself so early for so little.

After a lot of discussion, my wife and I figured out why this movie is just OK. It treats the romance more as an attraction than a relationship. With all the great romantic comedies, you feel the two leads are a match, that they compliment eachother. That's not the case with these two, you just like the characters separately, but the only reason they belong together is because we're told they do.

I enjoyed the beginning tale of a man venturing into the wild to find himself, then finding a family. And the nature is truly gorgeous. But then he starts killing off the Crow Nation. How heroic. Why was this movie made? Who said, "This guy eats the livers of Native Americans! Let's make a movie about him!"

I have officially reached the point where it takes me 3 nights to make it through a long movie. Maybe that is to blame, but I was not impressed by this. Another case of "Why make this movie?" It just shows the further downward spiral of corruption. I think that point was already made well by the first movie.
Lawrence of Arabia (Limited Edition)Lawrence of Arabia (Limited Edition)

It was like the director was _trying_ to make a 4 hour movie. Every shot is held 10 seconds too long. I am so perplexed as to why this is a "classic" and #29 on imdb. The most positive thing I can say about this movie is, "Pretty deserts."
The Departed (Widescreen Edition)The Departed (Widescreen Edition)
Buy new: $8.49 / Used from: $3.95
One of the most distressingly tasteless, alarmingly crude and shamelessly unoriginal movies I've ever seen. Why was this awarded Best Picture? It is an exact replica of Infernal Affairs! This movie offends and annoys me on so many levels.
