![]() | Nikon D40x 10.2MP Digital SLR Camera with 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6G ED II AF-S DX Zoom-Nikkor Lens
Buy new: $649.95 / Used from: $420.00 Selected for the 10.2 MP, price point, & strongest reviews. Final kicker was the SD format -it fit our other products.. D60 sounds like it would be the same
Not disappointed at all, but the "AF-S only" limits functionality of many lenses. This is the only thing which makes me want a D80.

![]() | Nikon 50mm f/1.8D AF Nikkor Lens for Nikon Digital SLR Cameras
Buy new: $109.95 / Used from: $99.99 I got it (3/17)..., even though it is not AF-S. More speed in low light will make a difference (f/1.8 is nice). After I got it - learned that you better check the di-opter on your camera -- kinda important with manual focus.

![]() | Nikon 18-200mm f/3.5-5.6 G ED-IF AF-S VR DX Zoom-Nikkor Lens
Buy new: $639.95 / Used from: $530.00 I WANT THIS !!!! 6/11 - I GOT THIS !!!! Some will find the limitations of this lens, but I have no complaints. If I ever get the chance to use higher priced glass - maybe I will. Even then, you can't beat the flexibility.
10/26 -- still love this lens

![]() | Nikon SB-400 AF Speedlight for Nikon Digital SLR Cameras
Buy new: $99.95 / Used from: $90.00 Great starter flash, compact & works well -- SOOOOOOOOOO much better than the pop up, but as I read/learn more - should have sprung for an SB600 or 800.
|
![]() | Nikon SB-800 AF Speedlight Flash for Nikon Digital SLR Cameras
Buy new: $339.99 / Used from: $319.00 11/10: Yep - got it after running out of options on the SB 400. This does more than you can imagine. Why is it so expensive? Well, it more like a camera --just with a strobe instead of a shutter. Downside: it's big - this rig is going to stand out in a crowd & give me a reputation ... so be it.

![]() | SLIK 615-315 Professional Photo/video Tripod with Panhead
Buy new: $129.77 / Used from: $110.00 Solid tripod - great addition. It's a bit big for casual use - but very flexible and very solid. something of this caliber is a must for the really interesting shots.

![]() | Nikon ML-L3 Wireless Remote Control for Nikon D40, D40x, D60 & D80 Digital SLR Cameras
Buy new: $14.89 / Used from: $12.99 For the price -- cool... no more running back to the camera

![]() | Tiffen 52mm UV Protection Filter
Buy new: Too low to display / Used from: $3.99 Cheap insurance

![]() | Tamrac Adventure 7 Photo Backpack (Red/Black)
Buy new: $74.95 / Used from: $54.97 I (thought I) like(d) the backpack functionality vs. the more traditional bags. Though, I can see me growing out of it.
(9/15)yep, out grew it! and the camera is difficult to get to. Looking at Lowenpro or Domke next.

![]() | Understanding Exposure: How to Shoot Great Photographs with a Film or Digital Camera (Updated Edition) by Bryan Peterson
Buy new: $17.11 / Used from: $12.25 Excellent book. It finally made me understand how it all comes together (f-stop & shutter speed). It also made me learn how to do all that stuff on my camera - making the Digital Field Guide (below) all that more useful. .

![]() | Understanding Shutter Speed: Creative Action and Low-Light Photography Beyond 1/125 Second by Bryan Peterson
Buy new: $16.47 / Used from: $12.35 More Peterson. It actually is a good follow up to Understanding Exposure, but not nearly as useful. Get "Exposure" first. This one was good for ideas. Downers: Giving instruction about composition & then saying you were in continuous shooting mode doesn't help with credibility, and LOTS of picures of family and friends -- what gives? Still - for $17 -- well worth it.

![]() | The Digital Photography Book by Scott Kelby
Buy new: $11.99 / Used from: $13.99 See below. found out these two books are a set, not an update from 1 to 2. The presentation is about 200 pages of 30 second lessons. Overall, very quick read, good suggestions and tips.
|
![]() | The Digital Photography Book, Volume 2 by Scott Kelby
Buy new: $14.99 / Used from: $14.90 See above. I. The two volumes are different enough, but somewhat repetitive. Suggest you save time & get them both. If you have to buy only one, (especially if you're still trying to figure out what kind of photgrapher you want to be) get the first book - it has a larger scope of topics.

![]() | The Moment It Clicks: Photography secrets from one of the world's top shooters (Voices That Matter) by Joe McNally
Buy new: $32.99 / Used from: $31.99 coming soon - I bought on the recommendation of Kelbly and other web reviews.
3/18/2008:
Got it - good pictures, quick read - I know I won't be the next McNally (couldn't afford it), but I did get his overall message (Light, content, Light, context, Light, control, & LIGHT). I got a couple "newbie" tips I can really use & a lot of ideas to think about

![]() | Nikon D40/D40x Digital Field Guide by David D. Busch
Buy new: $13.59 / Used from: $13.02 Better than the manual. Somewhat useful tips, but great for learning what the camera does.

![]() | Adobe Photoshop Elements 6 & Adobe Premiere Elements 4 [OLD VERSION]
Buy new: $119.99 / Used from: $82.00 Very good for fixing some bad pictures. Love the organizer.
10/24 - this is worth the time and investment. Remember EVERY great photgraph has been post processed (even if it is just a crop). This will do most of what anyone would need - at the home it's more than enough.
|
![]() | The Photoshop Elements 6 Book for Digital Photographers (Voices That Matter) by Scott Kelby
Buy new: $26.99 / Used from: $24.29 9/15 - read it... Wow, I learned a lot. Good presentation - quick (typical Kelby) delivery ... very useful. My freinds are now impressed with the pictures I create.

![]() | Nikon D90 DX 12.3MP Digital SLR Camera with 18-105mm f/3.5-5.6G ED AF-S VR DX Nikkor Zoom Lens
Buy new: Too low to display / Used from: $1,140.00 Don't have this yet, but now I want it.... Now that I know how to use a DSLR, this has some big advantages. More pixels (i.e. more cropping opportunity), a better sensor, and I like the interface better (more buttons for key features - easier to adjust).
The movie would help, too. I have kids.
If your going to push creativity side - this looks like it's worth it over the D40/60.
|
![]() | Nikon 12-24mm f/4G ED IF Autofocus DX Nikkor Zoom Lens
Buy new: $843.29 / Used from: $830.00 Want it... I've got the 18-200 for everything, and the f1.8 50 mm for low light. This one will fill out the bottom (and wide) spectrum. Can't bring myself to the price point yet, but we're working on that problem.
