Buy new: $35.95 / Used from: $38.25 Must have book on lighting. What are you waiting for? Buy this, and get the camera gear second.

![]() | Nikon D300 DX 12.3MP Digital SLR Camera (Body Only)
Buy new: Too low to display / Used from: $1,250.00 Great improvement over the D70s: can through-the-lens meter with the lensbaby, has better light meter, sensor cleaning, and so on. My primary digital camera right now. Cons: larger, more expensive.

![]() | Nikon 18-70mm f/3.5-4.5G ED IF AF-S DX Nikkor Zoom Lens
Buy new: $399.00 / Used from: $109.99 Kit lens purchased with Nikon D70s. Soft, decent for landscape type shots, don't really use this much, except on long backpacking trips where weight is a concern. Would probably instead go with the 18-200VR for a do-anything walkabout lens if starting from scratch.

![]() | Nikon SB-600 Speedlight Flash for Nikon Digital SLR Cameras
Buy new: $172.95 / Used from: $159.99 Works as remote flash with both D70s and D300. However, does not control sb-r200 remote flashes; you'll need a sb-800 or su-800 to control those. Probably better to go with a sb-400 (simple, stupid, cheap) or a su-800 or higher.

Buy used from: $29.99 Tricky to use... have to point it somewhere at the front of the camera.

![]() | Nikon MC-DC1 Remote Cord for Nikon D70S & D80 Digital SLR Cameras
Buy new: $24.23 / Used from: $18.75 Essential for long exposures, much easier to use than wireless remote. I prefer the old steel cables instead of these modern plastic gimmicks.

![]() | Lensbaby 2.0 Nikon F Mount SLR Camera Lens (LB2N)
Buy new: $149.95 / Used from: $72.99 Great for creative shots. No perfection here. Newer 3G with the screw mounts better for macro/detailed work.

![]() | Nikon 50mm f/1.4D AF Nikkor Lens for Nikon Digital SLR Cameras
Buy new: $280.00 / Used from: $285.00 The nikon 50mm f/1.8 should be sharper than this lens. I like fixed focus lenses for practicing composition, and this is smaller than the rest of my lenses. If you just want to get shots, modern zoom lenses are probably more useful.

![]() | Nikon 105mm f/2.8G ED-IF AF-S VR Micro-Nikkor Lens
Buy new: $739.95 Love this glass: almost all my best shots were taken with this lens. Great for macro, walkabout telephoto needs. I strongly recommend B+W polarizing filters for any lens you own, as these control polarized light, and can improve color saturation.

![]() | Nikon 85mm f/1.4D AF Nikkor Lens for Nikon Digital SLR Cameras
Buy new: $1,031.83 Picked this up used. Excellent portrait lens with soft focus, especially in the f/2.8 - f/5.6 range. Not as handy as the 105mm macro, as has a long minimum focus distance.
|
![]() | Nikon 24-70mm f/2.8G ED AF-S Nikkor Wide Angle Zoom Lens
Buy new: $1,459.95 / Used from: $1,400.00 Awesome glass. Again, cons are the size, weight, and cost.

![]() | ExpoImaging ExpoDisc 62mm Digital White Balance Solution Filter for Digital Still & Video Cameras
Buy new: $84.95 / Used from: $65.00 Removes an annoying yellow cast from the lights in my apartment, though makes the images quite cold. D300 much better about white balance than the D70s, have not needed to use these on the D300.

![]() | Apple Aperture 2.1.1
Buy new: $158.49 Do almost all of my image editing in Aperture, only a little in Photoshop where more detailed or experimental work required.
