The Betterphoto Guide to Digital Photography (Amphoto Guide Series)The Betterphoto Guide to Digital Photography (Amphoto Guide Series) by Jim Miotke
Buy new: $16.47 / Used from: $12.69
A great starting point. This covers all aspects of photography and uses great photographic examples without becoming bogged down in difficult technicalities. Each chapter ends with an Assignment for you. By completing each assignment, you will quickly learn your way around photography.
Understanding Exposure: How to Shoot Great Photographs with a Film or Digital Camera (Updated Edition)Understanding Exposure: How to Shoot Great Photographs with a Film or Digital Camera (Updated Edition) by Bryan Peterson
Buy new: $17.11 / Used from: $12.25
This should be among the first books you buy. It explains the relationship between aperture, shutter speed, ISO, and exposure. An absolute must for the novice.
Mastering Composition with your Digital SLRMastering Composition with your Digital SLR by Chris Rutter
Buy new: $19.77 / Used from: $14.21
One of two books I have dealing solely with composition and creativity. This book will very much get you started on considering images from a creative perspective and with practice, it will show in your photographs.
The Photographer's Guide to Composition (Photographer's Guide)The Photographer's Guide to Composition (Photographer's Guide) by John Freeman
Buy used from: $2.40
The second book on my shelf dealing almost exclusively with composition. This books provides similar information in a similar format as "Mastering Composition". Again, easy to understand and, with practice, will help take your photography up a level.
The BetterPhoto Guide to Digital Nature Photography (BetterPhoto Series)The BetterPhoto Guide to Digital Nature Photography (BetterPhoto Series) by Jim Miotke
Buy new: $16.47 / Used from: $11.16
The second book by Jim Miotke on my list. This is also well presented and is skewed toward nature shots. This includes landscapes, macros, and animal photography. Like the previous Miotke book, it has Assignments at the end of each chapter. I recommend completing these assignments as they build your experience, understanding, and ability.
National Geographic Photography Field Guide: Secrets to Making Great Pictures, Second EditionNational Geographic Photography Field Guide: Secrets to Making Great Pictures, Second Edition by Peter Burian
Buy used from: $13.08
Published in 2003, this has a foot in both camps; digital and film. However, the information is still great. Presented by photographers who are obviously very experienced and skilled, it contains a wealth of knowledge. The photographs are exceptional and inspiring examples. It's small physical size makes it ideal for travel whether local public transport or global jet-setting.
