I have found the 18-55 kit lens too short. While I hate to give up its wide-angle abilities, the minority of my shots are at the wide end. This lens is inexpensive, compact, has a useful maximum focal length, and is well-reviewed. So, why not the 17-70 lenses from Canon and the independents? Perhaps their focal lengths are better, but they're more costly and have worse reviews.
