Lonely Planet JapanLonely Planet Japan by Chris Rowthorn
Buy used from: $3.00
My current home. A quirky pop culture, lots of concrete, some marvelous temples and shrines, beautiful scenery, fascinating society, and a great quality of life.
Lonely Planet USALonely Planet USA by Jeff Campbell
Buy used from: $7.50
My country of birth. Most people go for the cities and the pop culture. The real attraction, in my opinion, is the vast swathe of stunning scenery. National & state parks reign supreme.
France (Country Guide)France (Country Guide) by Nicola Williams
Buy new: $16.49 / Used from: $10.75
I spent about six months of study in Amiens, Picardie. Not the most picturesque quarter of the country, but a great experience all the same. Paris transcends all classifications. Great country.
Germany (Country Guide)Germany (Country Guide) by Andrea Schulte-Peevers
Buy new: $18.47 / Used from: $15.50
The beer alone is justification for a visit, but the sheer number of major historic sites and attractive, interesting cities is overwhelming (especially in light of how much was destroyed in WWII).
Lonely Planet ItalyLonely Planet Italy by Damien Simonis
Buy used from: $1.48
Easily one of my favorite countries in the world. The wine, the food, the history, the atmosphere, the landscapes & the people. Avoid the tourist hordes (no mean feat!) and get to know the real place.
Korea (Country Guide)Korea (Country Guide) by Unattributed Author
Buy new: $17.15 / Used from: $8.21
I spent three months living outside Daegu a couple years back. Seoul's a fine, bustling, Asian metropolis. Welcoming people, spicy food, scenic national parks. Shame about the ugly cities though.
Vietnam (Country Guide)Vietnam (Country Guide) by Nick Ray
Buy new: $16.31 / Used from: $16.64
A gorgeous country with an intriguing and sometimes troubled history. Saigon and Hoi An are fantastic destinations; Hanoi is the quintessential "Indochinese" metropolis. Watch out for rip-off artists though!
Hungary (Country Guide)Hungary (Country Guide) by Neal Bedford
Buy new: $14.95 / Used from: $2.91
I spent a semester in Budapest - an enchanting and engaging place to live. The rest of the country is often overlooked. This is a shame, because there's much more beyond the capital. A unique culture.
Romania & Moldova (Lonely Planet Travel Guides)Romania & Moldova (Lonely Planet Travel Guides) by Robert Reid
Buy new: $16.49 / Used from: $9.99
Probably the most diverse country in Eastern Europe, Romania is sometimes like a step back in time. Bucharest's a crazy, but fascinating place; Transylvania's a gem. Haven't made it to Moldova (yet), but I hope to remedy that in 2007.
Czech & Slovak Republics (Country Guide)Czech & Slovak Republics (Country Guide) by Lisa Dunford
Buy new: $15.63 / Used from: $6.25
Prague's really hyped up. But, it is probably the most beautiful city in Central Europe. Amazing place, despite the English stag parties. Bratislava's a bit dull by comparison, but Slovakia is pretty.
England (Country Guide)England (Country Guide) by David Else
Buy new: $17.15 / Used from: $13.80
I used to have family out in Surrey. There are some great, historic towns and cities across the country. Loads and loads of history. The oft-dreary weather and punishingly-high prices drag things down a notch though.
Central Asia (Lonely Planet Travel Guides)Central Asia (Lonely Planet Travel Guides) by Bradley Mayhew
Buy new: $19.79 / Used from: $17.98
I spent a month hopping around Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan and Kyrgyzstan. Bukhara is among the most incredible places I've visited. Amazingly welcoming people - a truly authentic and untouched culture.
Georgia, Armenia & Azerbaijan (Lonely Planet Travel Guides)Georgia, Armenia & Azerbaijan (Lonely Planet Travel Guides) by Richard Plunkett
Buy used from: $2.75
I also spent a month in the South Caucasus. Georgia is a fabulous country with great food, wine, history and people. Armenia's fantastic too. Azerbaijan's sparser on sites, but interesting still.
Turkey (Country Guide)Turkey (Country Guide) by Verity Campbell
Buy new: $17.15 / Used from: $14.50
Turkey's marvelous. Great food, gorgeous sights, bucketloads of history, and wonderfully hospitable people. I feel like I've barely scratched the surface of the place, even though I spent a month there.
Bulgaria (Country Guide)Bulgaria (Country Guide) by Richard Watkins
Buy new: $23.99 / Used from: $0.05
One of the lesser known corners of Europe, but certainly not one of the least attractive. I've visited Plovdiv, Sofia and Veliko Tarnovo. I plan to one day see more. A surprisingly enjoyable country.
Poland (Country Guide)Poland (Country Guide) by Neil Wilson
Buy used from: $1.91
I've only visited Krakow and Oswiecim, but I very much cherished my time there. Krakow is gorgeous. Oswiecim (Auschwitz) is unsettling and sobering.
Spain (Country Guide)Spain (Country Guide) by Damien Simonis
Buy new: $17.81 / Used from: $15.00
Again, a country I've just barely seen any of, Spain is high on my "must return again" list. Madrid, Segovia and Toledo are well worth anyone's time (especially the latter two).
Lonely Planet GreeceLonely Planet Greece by Paul Hellander
Buy used from: $2.92
Athens is sprawling, polluted and drowning in concrete, but Plaka is charming as ever. And, how about those islands? Santorini is unparalleled. It's sad to hear that prices have risen so much.
Lonely Planet the Netherlands (Lonely Planet Travel Guides)Lonely Planet the Netherlands (Lonely Planet Travel Guides) by Neal Bedford
Buy new: $14.95 / Used from: $8.94
I've only ever visited Amsterdam, which is a world-class capital (save for the weather). Planning to take in a bit more of the country in 2007.
Western Balkans (Multi Country Guide)Western Balkans (Multi Country Guide) by Richard Plunkett
Buy new: $17.24 / Used from: $8.50
My experience with Slovenia was only a visit to the quaint, Austro-Hungarian style capital of Ljubljana. I spent a bit of time in Split and Zagreb in Croatia, as well as a jaunt into Bosnia (Medjugorje). I should hopefully be doing a more extended tour around the region in 2007.
Austria (Country Guide)Austria (Country Guide) by Neal Bedford
Buy used from: $0.50
High costs and some rather bland cities, but gorgeous scenery. Vienna's a tad stale - if packed with beautiful architecture and fine museums - but Salzburg is extremely pretty. Can't throw a rock without hitting a tour group unfortunately, but that's part of the package.
Lonely Planet DenmarkLonely Planet Denmark by Andrew Bender
Buy new: $21.99 / Used from: $0.59
Scandinavian countries tend to deter me with their sky-high prices. Still, I did make time for Copenhagen, which is a cool, hip place. Might well go back some day when I have money to blow.
Lonely Planet Belgium & LuxembourgLonely Planet Belgium & Luxembourg by Geert Cole; Leanne Logan
Buy new: $14.95 / Used from: $11.98
The beer is good and the frites hot and lathered in mayonaise (eh??). Ok, well, Brussels ain't the prettiest, but Bruges is stunning. When you aren't overwhelmed by tourist masses, that is.
Mongolia (Country Guide)Mongolia (Country Guide) by Michael Kohn
Buy new: $20.43 / Used from: $1.42
My most recent travel destination. Land of the vast, blue sky - not another place quite like it. Ger life is an experience all travelers should try. You'd just, uh, better get used to mutton.
Lonely Planet ChinaLonely Planet China by Damian Harper
Buy new: $21.11 / Used from: $17.80
I've only scratched the surface here - a mere four-day jaunt to Shanghai. But, the city provides a good insight into how fast the country is changing. And I will one day return. . .
Canada (Country Guide)Canada (Country Guide) by Andrea Schulte-Peevers
Buy used from: $1.05
One of my closest neighbors in terms of my home country, but I've only seen Montreal and Toronto. Toronto's another North American metropolis as far as I'm concerned, but Montreal's fab.
Switzerland (Country Guide)Switzerland (Country Guide) by Damien Simonis
Buy new: $14.95 / Used from: $8.00
I must confess that Switzerland isn't exactly a favorite of mine. The scenery is indeed gorgeous, but the cities are pretty stale and boring. There's a point when places can be 'too clean.'
Scotland (Country Guide)Scotland (Country Guide) by Neil Wilson
Buy used from: $1.00
Another paltry visit! Only a whirlwind tour of Edinburgh and Stirling, without even a brief view of the highlands to tide me over. A return is in store sometime.
Lonely Planet Malaysia, Singapore & BruneiLonely Planet Malaysia, Singapore & Brunei by Simon Richmond
Buy new: $16.31 / Used from: $13.99
Does a few hours exploring Kuala Lumpur count as a visit? I haven't had a chance to do anything more than that yet, and - apart from a stopover in Singapore - I haven't been to the other two.
