Great scanner... well worth the extra money
I was using a very slow (and old) Canoscan LiDE 30 flatbed on my iMac and decided that the software was too glitchy and the scanner too slow for doing my monthly scanning of receipts for expense reports. I looked at the Neat Receipts and a few other low cost options but finally bit the bullet and decided on the Fujitsu S300M. I didn't think I needed duplex scanning and figured the speed would be negligible. I think I was wrong.
This scanner is incredibly fast, doesn't take much space, straightens crooked scans, removes blank pages, and did I say it is incredibly fast? This will cut out hours of time arranging things onto the flatbed and waiting for it to scan.
The included Cardiris software for business cards doesn't seem to do too good of job, but I've read that you can buy much better solutions that work with this scanner. That isn't really a big focus for me so I'm not too worried about it. I also sent a form in for a free copy of the OCR program Readiris Pro. Again, I don't need this too urgently but who knows, if it works well and is easy enough I may start using it for other things.
Not too much to complain about. I guess if I was looking to criticize anything it would be that this scanner, to operate at full speed, needs to be plugged into the wall. It does have the option for USB-port power, but requires two USB cables to be connected to the computer (and apparently operates more slowly). My old scanner needed only one USB cable and no power connection. But any time spent plugging this in is more than countered in time saved doing actual scans.
If you are looking for a small, fast scanner for the Mac that doesn't give you a lot of headaches, this is a good bet. I certainly don't regret spending the extra money for the performance of the S300M.
Double your Productivity
One of the best pieces of hardware I have bought yet.
It's easy to use, fast, and makes creating PDFs a snap (no pun intended).
Another excellent feature is it's integration with other products like ReceiptWallet (scan and track receipts) YEP and, my new favorite, DEVONthink Pro.
This is a must have. Right up there with having a second monitor. Now that I have it, can't imagine how I got by without.
Easy, Fast, Efficient, Space-Saving, Reliable!
Wow!! I have never been more excited about a product in my entire life! First off, I am a Mac user and I can't begin to proclaim my enthusiasm for a "quick scanner" that caters to the Mac user-base. That was one of the main reasons I bought this scanner and I'm extremely happy I went with this scanner over all the other ones I looked at (including Iris, Pentax, and NeatReceipt scanners).
To begin, I just want to say that not only does this product look great (its snow white design and slick text logos fit in perfectly with Macs) it FEELS great as well. The scanner, only about 12 inches long, has some weight to it and feels like high-quality engineering went into it. It incorporates several nice features into it to help make scanning documents easier, including slide rules that adjust to the length of your document to hold it in place as it scans (for a straight, not skewed, scan) and a paper holder that extends to hold larger documents.
Scanning is fantastically easy. Just set up your document in the holder, press the scan button and the scanner briskly scans it through. Then the installed software automatically registers the scanned document and gives you a number of options of what you'd like to do with your document: scan to pdf, scan to email as an attachment, scan to print (automatically prints off your document), or scan to iPhoto (automatically opening up iPhoto to display your scanned document).
The image quality is outstanding as it should be, with a 600dpi resolution. You can set the scanner to scan fast or slow, slowest being the best quality (although I have been scanning on the fastest setting and have witnessed almost-perfect image qualities with very minimal blurring of text), and you can select the compression level for color images.
I was debating on my purchase, wondering if I should have gone all-out for a nice flatbed scanner, but now I'm extremely happy I went with this small, very fast, and very easy to use scanner for all of my documents, receipts, and papers. I highly recommend this product to everyone.
