Works good for me
I read a lot of bad reviews before I bought my network storage system and came to the conclusion that there were three types of people writing bad reviews. The first type is the computer master we all know that a 12 tech week class back in 1985 means that not only can you work your Wang (for those of you that weren't born yet a Wang was a computer back in the 80's) but your level of computer knowledge is far too great to read any type of directions. The second person is the person who has no technical knowledge at all. If installing a printer took two days and required four phone calls then you will probably be in over your head. The third type of person is the person that expects too much. As far as I know THIS PRODUCT WILL NOT!! Cure cancer, grow hair or help you lose weight. I didn't need it to do any of those I just wanted to store files and be able to retrieve them from any computer. That it does well. Computers on my network up and down load at about 4mps and from the internet at about 100kbs. I wish the transfer rate was I little faster on the internet but there are some other things that factor in to that speed that the device has no control over. Over all it just does what I bought it for. Make sure you follow the directions and if it doesn't work check the directions one more time because you probably missed something.
Great Home Network NAS
I purchased this unit to replace the Netgear SC101. This unit is considerably faster with more features and does not need it own drivers on the PC like the SC101 did. The NAS can be configured to use USB drivers however, any drive used with this device must be formatted in the NAS proprietary format. This means that you can not put the drive in a PC and read the contents. This seems to be a standard with most of these kind of devices. Not a big problem unless the device fails and you want to get your data off and don't want to buy a like device.
The NAS is easy to setup and has a nice web configure page. I recommend this device as it is great for the price.
Ok for the budget-minded
I got the NAS200 as my first NAS device and as the saying goes, you get what you pay for. The set up is fairly trivial, I was able to get a RAID1 with share going in less than an hour (the majority of time being taken up by drive formatting). Unfortunately, the performance is atrocious, not even measuring up to what I'd expect from 100BaseT. If you want simple, relatively cheap network storage with no expectations of real time stream, fine. But if you're wanting something with more oomph, look elsewhere.
