Album Description
Young female vocalist/bassist, Belinda Underwood, brings the tradition of jazz songwriting back to center stage. Hypnotic, sultry vocals and frank lyrics; artfully crafted arrangements; jazz standards as well as Belinda's jazz originals; all-star cast of musicians includes Airto Moreira, David Friesen, Phil Baker (Pink Martini), Martin Zarzar (Pink Martini) and others.
By Bill Donaldson, Jazz Improv Magazine, April 2005
...haunting lyrics, some painfully romantic and others environmentally observational, attract the listener’s attention, so non-traditional and poetically written....
By D.J. Fazio, thejazznation.com, March 2005
...an innate lyrical sense with intonation that is second to none....an artistic record that goes above and beyond.
Customer Reviews
Delightfully Unexpected
The emotional voice of Belinda Underwood calls to you from a velvet glade where tender green things grow, and you cannot help but be drawn in to the story that she weaves with each song. The lush character of her voice carries the melancholic hint of each song's meaning, making you feel like you understand much more than the words themselves can tell you. Refreshingly intimate original compositions (for a vocal jazz album), or is it the way she sings them? Come to think of it, the jazz standards on the album seemed intimate too...
The musicians playing with her are fabulous (she chose sensitive and emotional players), and I was surprised to find names I recognized: David Friesen, Airto Moreira, members of the band Pink Martini...
My listening experience was delightfully unexpected.
I heartily recommend this work.
