Similar to a standard portrait lens like the 85mm f/1.8, Canon's 100mm f/2 is also an exceptionally bright and short telephoto lens appropriate for both general photography and portraits. Some portrait photographers feel that 85mm doesn't give you quite enough of what you need in a portrait lens and they prefer the 100mm focal length as it provides just a bit more compression. Again, as with the 85mm, the wide f/2 aperture setting allows for a paper thin depth of field. That's a really good thing when shooting portraits. From the Manufacturer
Another option in high-speed moderate telephotos, this compact lens is ideal for portraits and low-light work. Compared to the 85mm f/1.8 USM lens, it provides that little bit extra of telephoto power sometimes necessary outdoors or for candid shooting. Like the 85mm, it’s super-sharp (even wide-open), and has fast USM autofocus along with full-time manual focusing.
A medium telephoto lens with a large aperture brings the subject closer, creates excellent background blur, gives a longer flash range, and affords a faster shutter speed to freeze the action. A standard zoom lens, with its natural angle of view and perspective, captures the subject plainly, with no special effects. However, you can use standard lenses in creative ways by varying the subject distance, aperture, and angle.

one of my favorites
I love this lens. I bought it basically because it is the longest focal length with a really large aperture under $500 ($925 for the 135 f2 and $4800 for the 200 f2). It focuses quick and is razor sharp, even wide open (I find I shoot with it 95% of the time at f2.0). On my crop sensor 40D it acts as a short telephoto and allows me to capture great action and tight portraits with perfectly blurred backgrounds.
My one and only complaint is the lens hood attachment is not the best design. Definitely not large enough an issue to deduct a star.
small, sharp, great portrait lens
I prefer this fast lens to the 85 1.8 - it simply produces a better portrait in my opinion. Lovely, small, light....the perfect little lens without going to an L. Highly recommend; I use as a back-up and always have it in my camera bag. Love it.
Great prime from Canon
Much has been said on this classic lens. My copy is spot on from the box. AF is silent and fast. I use this for children indoor head shots. 50mm doesn't give me enough room to work with and it makes my subject self-conscious...
Only the hood is of secondary quality, feels cheap and the snap-on feels unreliable. My hood on the 50f1.4 is way better, and cheaper as well.
