From Digital Living Today
With the rise of digital image use on the Web, it becomes more and more appealing for Internet aficionados to have easy access to both digital photography and digital video at a moment's notice. For those of you who want to be able to post snapshots on the Web, or explore video Internet telephony, but don't want to invest in a high-end video or digital still-camera, Intel has come out with the ingenious Pocket PC Camera. The Pocket PC is a multi-purpose, digital video and still image camera that can be attached to your PC using a 9-foot USB cable that comes included. Its optics utilize a progressive scan CCD that allow it to capture still and video images at resolutions of up to 640x480. The video mode allows for up to 30-fps full-motion AVI video. If you want to use it away from your computer, unplug it from its cradle and use 4AAA batteries to power the Pocket PC as it fills up its 8MB of onboard memory. With the exception that the Pocket PC is incompatible with Macs, it is one of those rare, affordable, gadgets that everyone should run out and buy.
Customer Reviews
Great camera and it has a focus for close ups.
I just bought my 3rd. The first one I dropped too many times. The second one I lost. I just don't see anything better on the market.
Cons: The battery compartment door doesn't lock as well as it could and the batteries sometimes fall out at inconvenient times. The color makes it seem kind of toyish. It has XP issues, but the work-around program seemed to work good enough. I've not used it for a web cam on XP though. It worked fine with Win/98 though.
Pros: Its lens can be focused for close ups; this is a rare feature for small web/digital cams as many can't focus on anything under 3 feet. Picture quality is very good. I use a digital camera for work but the battery life of my 'good' camera is just ridiculously short. I use this as a replacement as the images are fine for most outdoor shots.
Good but has XP problems
This camera has amazing quality, no doubt. I've had one for a long time and coming from someone who has owned a total of 8+ webcams in her life, trust me when I say this was the best one I've had. However, this camera has issues with Windows XP. Even after downloading the patch on their website, the camera will still "scramble" it's pictures if you leave it on for longer than 5 minutes when using it as a webcam. So if you're doing a live feed to your website, every now and then it will scramble all the pixels on the feed. If you can deal with that, the camera is worth it. But if you plan on going live on cam for hours at a time, I would not recommend this camera. Go for something newer.
Very durable and great.
I own it and it has been droped many times since santa gave it to me (about 2001 0r 2002). When I got it for christmas, it did not work with win xp or win 2000. My dad got me a program from intel's website wich would download the all the pictures on the camera. Now I use a driver from the same website. Then, I used the driver that came with the camera on an Win 98 pc. Today I use it a lot. It still works. Intel no longer sells this line.
